Flint Town United 1 - Haverfordwest County 0

Flint Town United gained a narrow one-goal victory against Haverfordwest County at Essity Stadium.

Ben Hughes’ early goal in the second half earned the Silkmen the points as Tony Pennock’s men suffered their second defeat on the bounce.

Haverfordwest County made two changes from the starting line-up after last week’s narrow 1-0 defeat against champions TNS, Luke Tabone returns from international duty also Ben Fawcett is up top with Ben Ahmun.

The visitors had the better of the first half as skipper Corey Shephard was denied twice, once with a desperate goal line clearance the other was a superb diving save by Jack Flint from an edge of the area direct free kick.

Shortly after the break the Silkmen took the lead, as Zac Jones’ poor clearance fell to Ricky Watts who was dispossessed on the touch line Bobby Beaumont-Broadhead, the latter made good ground before he squared the ball to Hughes who swept home from 12 yards.

Jones pulled off a good save to deny the hosts as Ben Ahmun struck the side netting as the striker got on the end of a low Greg Walters cross from the left, minute later Walters saw his wicked 18 yard volley saved by keeper Flint.

In stoppage time the frustrated Bluebirds nearly equalised as Shephard struck the crossbar, that effort summed up the luckless Bluebirds’ afternoon.

Haverfordwest County Tony Pennock was named ‘Manager of the Month’ for August but he wasn’t happy with this poor result at the Essity Stadium.

“This was by far the poorest performance of the season so far. We had a good spell for 20 minutes where we were very good, created a few chances Shephard had one cleared off the line. In the second half we huffed and puffed we just couldn’t get on the end of opportunities. It was a poor goal to concede, they held onto the goal lead and in fairness to them they did it well.”
